Megalodon Unearthed Review
A review of 'Megalodon Unearthed: Unlocking the Secrets behind the Ultimate Prehistoric Shark'
Around two years ago, Dr. Jay Lipoff messaged me about images for a megalodon book he was writing. He told me a bit about the book, and I was intrigued. Although Otodus megalodon is arguably the most well known prehistoric shark, there are almost no good books about it. Most are either fiction, poorly researched, or geared toward children. So his endeavor got me excited!
Fast forward to now, and his book has been published. I immediately got my hands on one and was not disappointed. It is very well-researched, fact checked, and drawn from fossil evidence and scientific analysis. This, in my opinion, is the best megalodon book written thus far. He heavily relied on Dr. Harry Maisch, a paleontologist who studies Cenozoic sharks, including Otodus megalodon, for fact checking and research contributions. Dr. Jay Lipoff did a fantastic job.
I would like to go through a brief overview of the book in order to entice you to get a copy! I think anyone interested in megalodons, fossil shark teeth, or hunts for megalodon teeth should read this book!
The introduction chapter is a detailed, yet easy to read, explanation of the geologic history of the southeastern US, with a focus on Florida, since many of the megalodon fossils are found there.
Just by reading the first chapter, you will get an idea of how well-researched this book is.
Speaking of how easy to read it is, it is also image forward, as I don't recall a single page that does not have at least one high resolution colored photo, figure, or illustration on it.
Although the book is image forward, don't get me wrong, the book contains all of the scientific evidence and analysis in it, which makes it a great read for both beginners and advanced readers on paleontology.
Moving onto chapter one, after learning about the geological history, he sets the stage for megalodon by going over a brief history of sharks. He then moves onto the science behind how we study fossil sharks, particularly the megalodon. Each chapter is short and to the point, and each teases out new insights into the megalodon shark.
By chapter three we are fully immersed in the megalodon shark, as it discusses the coastal nurseries, which were its birthing grounds, including the known nurseries in Panama, Spain, Florida, and the Carolinas.
Chapter four goes into megalodon taxonomy and evolution. This chapter is refreshing as it has all the up to date research, all clarified in one section.
Chapter five brings us to what megalodon ate and how it was a global species. This chapter also discusses other apex predators at the time, such as the giant Livyatan melvillei (a monster sperm whale)!
The next chapter shows us evidence of predation. Proof that it ate large whales for dinner, and finally chapter five and six is what most people are looking for, megalodon teeth, with an explanation of their morphology, dentitions, variations, and more. And yes, there are many beautiful images in these chapters!
Lipoff then moves to chapter nine, which asks the question is megalodon alive today. He does a great job at this sensitive subject, as I sometimes get hate mail when people read my article about why megalodon is extinct. Lipoff brings up all of the scientific evidence and facts about their extinction and does an overall great job of answering this question... ultimately relating a living megalodon to the loch ness monster and big foot!
In chapter ten he satisfies all of us fossil hunters by going over fossil hunting locations and strategies for finding megalodon teeth! Many of us ardent megalodon hunters have been to these places and it's comforting to see them in this book. The end of this chapter has pages and pages of megalodon teeth images and shark tooth identification charts for many of the fossil locations (including some of mine).
Finally the last couple chapters are more or less image galleries, they are full of megalodon teeth and other fossils found in the megalodon bearing formations. I particularly love the pathological shark teeth sections!
If you are interested in fossil shark teeth, fossil hunt for megalodons, then this book needs to be on your bookshelf.
Oh, he also wrote a children's book about megalodon if you have any future paleontologists running around the house.
