Isotelus Trilobites: Giant Ordovician Fossils and Identification

Isotelus was a broad, smooth-bodied Ordovician trilobite that included some of the largest trilobites ever discovered. This guide covers its anatomy, identification, diet, major species, fossil locations, and examples from the Maquoketa Shale and Cincinnati Arch.

Name: Isotelus is pronounced "eye-SOT-uh-lus." The name comes from Greek words meaning "equal end," referring to the head shield and tail shield being roughly similar in size.

Taxonomy: Phylum Arthropoda; Class Trilobita; Order Asaphida; Family Asaphidae; Genus Isotelus.

Age: Middle to Late Ordovician Period. Many famous North American specimens are about 450 million years old.

Common Species: Well-known species include Isotelus gigas, Isotelus maximus, Isotelus iowensis, and the giant Isotelus rex.

Distribution: North America, including Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, Ontario, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Manitoba.

Body Size: Many individuals were several inches long, but some species grew much larger. The largest known virtually complete trilobite, Isotelus rex, exceeded 700 mm, or about 28 inches.

Physical Appearance: A broad oval body with a smooth exoskeleton, prominent compound eyes, eight thoracic segments, a wide central axis, and a large pygidium.

Diet: Probably an active seafloor predator and scavenger. Trace fossils show that at least some Isotelus may have dug into sediment to capture worm-like animals.

State Fossil: The genus Isotelus has been Ohio's official state invertebrate fossil since 1985.

Isotelus Trilobite Facts and Overview

Isotelus was one of the classic large trilobites of the Ordovician seas. Its body was broad, smooth, and fairly simple compared with the spiny or heavily ornamented shells of many other trilobites. That plain shape can make it look less dramatic at first, but a complete Isotelus is an impressive fossil, especially when its large size becomes obvious.


The genus was named by James E. De Kay in 1824, and Isotelus gigas is its type species. The name means "equal end" because the cephalon, or head shield, and the pygidium, or tail shield, are close to one another in size and overall shape. Between them are eight thoracic segments, fewer than in many other familiar trilobites.


The cephalon was wide and carried a pair of large compound eyes. The glabella and axial furrows were often faint, giving the upper shell a smooth appearance. The pygidium was also broad, with segmentation that could become difficult to see in large adults. On the underside, Isotelus had a broad doublure and terrace lines that may have helped the animal grip or stabilize itself against the sediment.


Isotelus probably spent much of its time moving across or partly within soft seafloor sediment. Its smooth body may have allowed it to push through mud, hide from predators, or shallowly bury itself. Like other trilobites, it could enroll to protect its legs and soft underside inside the hard exoskeleton (Shrake and Peter, 2023).


Its diet was probably more active than simple mud feeding. A remarkable Upper Ordovician trace fossil from Ohio preserves an Isotelus resting or digging trace crossing a worm burrow. The evidence indicates that the trilobite dug into the sediment and captured the worm, providing rare evidence of predatory behavior in Isotelus (Brandt et al., 1995). Other species may also have scavenged or searched the seafloor for small animals and organic material.

How to Identify Isotelus Trilobite Fossils

A complete Isotelus is usually easy to recognize by its broad oval outline, smooth shell, large eyes, eight thoracic segments, and large tail shield. The cephalon and pygidium are often so similar in size that beginners may have trouble deciding which end of an incomplete fossil is the head.


Most collectors do not find complete specimens. Large pieces of the cephalon, pygidium, thorax, doublure, or hypostome are much more common. These fragments are usually smooth and can be several inches across. The broad, thick shell and faint segmentation help separate Isotelus from smaller, more strongly ribbed trilobites.


The underside can be especially useful. Terrace lines often form closely spaced, fingerprint-like ridges on the doublure, genal area, or hypostome. Large isolated hypostomes can look like thick, forked plates and are sometimes mistaken for parts of other animals.


Species-level identification is harder. In the Cincinnati Arch region, Isotelus maximus generally grew larger and had a more rounded outline, while Isotelus gigas had a more triangular outline. However, incomplete and distorted specimens are often safest identified as Isotelus sp. unless the formation and diagnostic parts are known.




Giant Isotelus and the Largest Trilobites

Isotelus is famous for producing some of the largest trilobites in the fossil record. Many complete specimens are much smaller, but adults of several species could reach lengths measured in tens of centimeters. In Ohio, the famous Huffman Dam specimen measures 14.5 inches, or 37 cm, long. It was discovered during dam construction in 1919 and helped inspire Ohio to choose Isotelus as its official state invertebrate fossil (Shrake and Peter, 2023).


The record holder is Isotelus rex from Upper Ordovician rocks of northern Manitoba, Canada (shown in the image above). Its virtually complete exoskeleton measures more than 700 mm, or about 28 inches, making it almost 70 percent longer than the previously documented largest complete trilobite. Researchers interpreted this giant animal as a possible semi-burrowing predator and scavenger that searched through shallow sediment for food (Rudkin et al., 2003).




Where Isotelus Trilobite Fossils Are Found

Isotelus fossils occur across a broad area of Ordovician North America. Important finds have come from the central and eastern United States and Canada, including Ohio, Kentucky, Indiana, New York, Ontario, Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Missouri, and Manitoba. The genus occurs in both limestone and shale, depending on the local environment in which the fossils were buried.

The Upper Ordovician Maquoketa Shale and related Maquoketa Group rocks extend across parts of Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Missouri. These rocks were deposited in marine settings and contain a varied fossil fauna that includes brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, graptolites, cephalopods, and trilobites.


In northeastern Missouri, certain beds in the lower Maquoketa preserve unusually complete specimens of Isotelus iowensis. These trilobites appear to have been rapidly buried by storm-driven sediment flows. Some specimens are enrolled, while others are outstretched, upside down, or preserved at unusual angles. Rare examples even retain traces of the digestive system as a carbonized film (Devera, 2012).

The Cincinnati Arch region of southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky, and southeastern Indiana is one of the best-known areas for Upper Ordovician fossils in North America. During the Late Ordovician, this region was covered by a warm, shallow sea. The alternating limestone and shale now exposed around Cincinnati contain abundant brachiopods, bryozoans, crinoids, corals, gastropods, cephalopods, and trilobites.


Two familiar species from the region are Isotelus maximus and Isotelus gigas. Fragments are common in some layers, but complete fossils are rare because the large exoskeleton often separated into individual pieces after molting or death. Collectors commonly find parts of the cephalon or pygidium, isolated thoracic segments, broad underside pieces, and large hypostomes.


One of Ohio's most famous trilobite discoveries is the Huffman Dam specimen. It was uncovered in 1919 by workers excavating an outlet tunnel during construction of Huffman Dam on the Mad River, northeast of Dayton. Measuring 14.5 inches long and about 10 inches wide, this remarkably complete Isotelus maximus was one of the largest complete trilobites known at the time. The fossil later came into the care of Ohio paleontologist August F. Foerste and was transferred to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, where it is cataloged as USNM PAL 66775.


Southwestern Ohio also produced the partial fossil that John Locke used to name Isotelus maximus in 1838. Locke found an enormous isolated pygidium, or tail shield, and estimated that the complete trilobite would have measured about 22 inches long. More than a century later, Dayton-area elementary students who had seen a cast of the Huffman Dam specimen campaigned to make Isotelus an Ohio state symbol. Their effort succeeded in 1985, when Ohio officially designated the genus Isotelus as its state invertebrate fossil.

Find Isotelus Fossils at Caesar Creek, Ohio

The Caesar Creek Spillway exposes fossil-rich Upper Ordovician limestone and shale within the Cincinnati Arch region. Pieces of Isotelus can be found there, although complete specimens are rare. Collectors are more likely to find a broken cephalon, pygidium, thoracic segment, hypostome, or a smooth piece of the broad underside.
